Marco van Basten attacked Barcelona’s striking duo Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann with criticism after a recent loss to Atletico.
Marco van Basten bombarded harsh criticism towards Barcelona’s deadly duo Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann. He mentioned that they have been playing football without any purpose for the Catalunya giants.
The France international joined forces with the Argentine at Camp Nou from Atletico Madrid in July 2019. However, we could not see these world-class talents combine together for Barca ever since. And once again, Messi and Griezmann could not make a difference for Ronald Koeman’s side last weekend. The Blaugrana side lost to Atletico 1-0 in their encounter in La Liga.
The harsh words of a legend.
Marco van Basten though could not help but make crude comments regarding the duo’s current form. The legendary frontman has won 20 major honors during his glorious career including three European Cups with AC Milan. “Simply they are playing bad now,” Van Basten said on Ziggo Sport. “[Lionel] Messi and [Antoine] Griezmann are playing like two people without purpose, like a bunch of bakers.”
Van Basten used the Dutch term “Stelletje koekenbakkers” which means “a bunch of bakers”. And it metaphorizes to people who do not know what they are doing without a sense of ambition. Additionally, he believes that there are several reasons why Messi is underperforming in Barcelona. He also talked about the six-time Ballon d’Or winner’s messy situation with Griezmann.
“He will no doubt be annoyed that there is no crowd,” the Dutchman added. “Besides, he has not trained much in the last few months; he has done little work. He is not happy with the situation in and around Barcelona.”
“And then there’s that mess with Griezmann. It’s an accumulation. We don’t know him like that at all.”
