A brace from Sadio Mane was enough for Jurgen Klopp’s men to snatch all three points from a crucial fixture at Stamford Bridge.
It was an exciting evening as two of the Premier League’s heavyweights clashed in one of the most anticipated matches at the weekend early in the season.
Thiago Alacantara made the wrong kind of impact on his debut, Jorginho made some unwanted history, and Kepa Arrizabalaga also made the headlines for the wrong reasons in a match that saw Sadio Mane grab most of the positive spotlight.
A sending off for Andreas Christensen just before the half-time break marked the start of Chelsea’s misery. Referee Paul Tierney initially just cautioned Christensen but upgraded his decision to a marching order after VAR review for Christensen who had brought down Mane.
The Reds did not take much time to cut open the defense of their 10-man opposition as a combination of all three of their frontline, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Mane, led to a goal for the former.
Arrizabalaga was at fault for Liverpool’s second goal. The under-fire goalkeeper played a causal pass which was intercepted by Mane, who then easily scored his second.
Frank Lampard’s men were handed an opportunity for a comeback when Thiago, who was handed his first Liverpool appearances following an injury to Jordan Henderson, tripped Timo Werner inside the box. However, the resultant penalty, taken by Jorginho, was saved by Alisson.
It was the first time in nine attempts across all competitions that Jorginho missed a penalty for the Blues.
Both teams had a few more scoring chances but the final scoreline showed Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool.
