Jose Mourinho returns to Old Trafford on Sunday evening to face his old side Manchester United once more with Tottenham.

The Portuguese will have his work cut out in leading Spurs to a third successive win considering it is the club’s fourth game in a week. How they will fare is anybody’s guess. But you get the feeling Jose would be satisfied with a point, and who can blame him either?

Spurs’ congested schedule, though, could come at an opportune moment for United. The hosts have experienced another underwhelming start to their campaign and need a big win to kick-start their challenge.

Manchester United Form & Stats

After losing their Premier League opener 3-1 to Crystal Palace, United have secured back-to-back victories over Brighton in the past week. The first one, in particular, was a controversial one. It required a 100th-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes to settle, securing their first three points with a 3-2 win.

Overseeing the same opponents at the Amex again by a 3-0 scoreline was far more satisfying. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even rested key players, like Fernandes and Mason Greenwood, in the fixture. This may give them an edge over a drained Spurs side for Sunday.

Three wins on the bounce is exactly what Solskjaer needs heading into the international break. Although a patchy run of form at Old Trafford of late (P5 W2 D1 L2) may be a cause for concern for the Red Devils.

Key Team Stats
  • Not won their last three home league games.
  • Over 2.5 goals in last four games in all competitions.
  • Won six of their last seven home games against Tottenham in all competitions.

Tottenham Form & Stats

Since their 1-0 opening day defeat to Everton on September 13 in the Premier League, Spurs have played six times in the last 23 days. That’s about one match every four days for the club. Therefore, it’s only natural they’re a little short-handed.

The biggest question is whether Son Heung-min will be available for selection on Sunday. Mourinho dropped a positive update on the forward in his pre-match conference by stating his hamstring injury isn’t as bad as first feared. However, he couldn’t confirm whether Son could play at Old Trafford.

Nevertheless, the Portuguese coach will be determined to grab something away to United. Last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle, which saw Spurs end up on the wrong end of a VAR-awarded penalty in the dying stages, was a sore one to swallow for him.

Beating another old side in Chelsea on penalties in the Carabao Cup and the recent 7-2 win over Maccabi Haifa in the Europa League, though, should leave the Lilywhites in good stead for their big clash.

Key Team Stats
  • Won five of their last six games in all competitions.
  • Lost just one of their last 13 competitive fixtures in all competitions.
  • BBTS and 4.5 goals in last six games in all competitions.
