The Red Devils move back up to second place in the league standings after a convincing victory against the Magpies at Old Trafford.

Manchester United grabbed all three points on Sunday with a 3-1 win against Newcastle United.

United entered the match on the back of a thrilling 4-0 win in the Europa League but in spite of what the scoreline suggests, they lacked the same attacking threat on their return to Premier League.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a wonderful solo strike as he rushed inside the box leaving his markers behind with ease before blasting the ball into the net through the legs of a defender and beating the goalkeeper, who perhaps should’ve done better, at his near post.

The visitors were able to produce a quick response. Allan Saint-Maximin, after a ball into the box was only half-cleared by Harry Maguire, hit the roof of the net from 12 yards to level things up.

Daniel James was handed his first league start of 2021, and he was able to justify his selection in the starting XI. Matic broke into the box with a lovely feint before deflecting the ball into the path of James, who smashed home to restore his side’s lead.

With around quarter of an hour to play, Rashford was tripped inside the box by Joe Willock and the referee straightaway pointed to the spot. Bruno Fernandes stepped up to the spot, stuttered slightly in his run but not in his aim as he buried the ball into the corner to take his tally up to six goals in his last six games.

Manchester United, though second-best for most parts, were able to get the job done and move back to second in the Premier League table.

As for Newcastle United, they remain just above the relegation zone with 25 points from as many games.
