Ace Football previews the Premier League match between Manchester United and Leeds United, and offers betting tips, odds, line-ups, and team news.
One of English football’s greatest and most hostile rivalries will renew on Sunday evening as Leeds take a trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
Six points and six places separate the two sides in the Premier League standings. United are ahead in seventh and boast a game in hand over 13th-placed Leeds, who have fared well on their return to the English top-flight all the same.
The last league meeting between United and Leeds back in February 2004, where an Alan Smith strike canceled out Paul Scholes’ opener to settle a 1-1 draw.
A lot has changed since then, of course. But if there is one thing that hasn’t, it’s the feeling Leeds would get from a victory in United’s own backyard. And considering the hosts’ home struggles this season, could that be the case?
Manchester United Form & Stats
Only a single victory has come United’s way in their last eight home league games (D4 L3). Just three teams in the Premier League have fared worse at home this season in Burnley, Brighton, and Sheffield United.
Perhaps the most worrying stat, however, is United scoring just three goals in six home league games and conceding 10 times this season. Burnley, who sit 18th in the points table, are the only club to score fewer home goals (2).
And if the Red Devils don’t score more than once on Sunday, they will equal an unwanted 80-year-old club record for not scoring over one goal in eight successive home top-flight matches.
An impressive away record (P6 W6), though, has made United the league’s most in-form team. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have won five of their last six league games (D1) to hand them 16 points out of an available 18.
Victory over Leeds, meanwhile, could also move them into a top-four spot by the end of the weekend and to within five points of league leaders Liverpool – and with a game in hand.
Key Team Stats
- Won just 1 of their 6 home league games this season (D2 L3).
- Won 2 of their last 5 games in all competitions (D1 L2).
- Over 3.5 goals in 6 of their last 7 games in all competitions.
- At least 1 penalty in 4 of their 6 home league games.
- BTTS in 8 of their last 10 games in all competitions.
Leeds United Form & Stats
A crushing 5-2 win over Newcastle United at Elland Road last Wednesday was the response Marcelo Bielsa’s side needed after losing their previous two matches. It leaves them seven points clear of the relegation zone.
The visit to Old Trafford should prove an interesting challenge. Like Manchester United, Leeds have been stronger on the road than at home with three wins in six league games (L3). They also provided Liverpool a stern test at Anfield in their season-opener, with only a late Mohamed Salah penalty denying them a point from a 4-3 thriller.
Bagging a famous victory in Manchester is a big ask for any club in Europe. But considering the Whites’ strong away form, along with the hosts’ struggles at the ‘The Theatre of Dreams’, there is no reason they can’t hope for at least a draw.
One player perhaps worth keeping an eye on is Patrick Bamford. The 27-year-old striker has scored six of his eight league goals away from home this season. He’s also found the back of the net against Liverpool and former club Chelsea.
Key Team Stats
- Lost 4 of their last 7 league games (W2 D1).
- Won 3 of their 6 away league games (L3).
- Over 3.5 goals in 2 of their last 3 league games.
- BTTS in 3 of their 6 away league games this season.
- Shown the first card in 5 of their 6 away league games.
- Patrick Bamford has scored in 5 of their six away league games.
