Manchester United and Arsenal meet for their 233rd competitive meeting in Sunday evening’s showdown in the Premier League.
Both sides head into the clash down in unfamiliar territory down in the lower half of the league standings. United, for instance, are 15th on seven points from five games, while Arsenal are only two points better off in 12th-place.
The pressure for all three points, therefore, will be tremendous as the clubs seek to kick-start their respective campaigns. Victory for either side would be a massive statement of intent – especially for the visitors.
But can Arsenal really pull one over United at Old Trafford? While they’re unbeaten in their last three encounters (W2 D1), they haven’t won at ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ since September 2006.
Manchester United Form & Stats
A 5-0 midweek triumph over RB Leipzig in the Champions League could prove a game-changer for Manchester United, having now scored 11 goals in their last four matches in all competitions. Expectations, therefore, have been raised.
This turnaround in form couldn’t have come at a better moment ahead of a must-win match. With a tricky trip to the high-flying Everton coming up next weekend, the Red Devils need three points against Arsenal – especially if they’re to avoid losing further ground in the top-four race.
Things do seem to be gradually coming together for the squad. Marcus Rashford, for one, is in red-hot form with five goals and two assists from his last four appearances, including a hat-trick against Leipzig last time out.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, meanwhile, has teased he could have up to FOUR different formations up his sleeve for Sunday. Aside from Alex Telles testing positive for COVID-19, the United boss has no fresh injury concerns.
Key Team Stats
- Won three of their last four games in all competitions.
- Under 2.5 goals in their last three games against Arsenal in all competitions.
- Unbeaten in their last six home games against Arsenal in all competitions.
- Marcus Rashford has scored five goals in his last four games in all competitions.
Arsenal Form & Stats
Mikel Arteta is possibly facing his biggest challenge as Arsenal manager yet, with the squad experiencing a slump in form.
A midweek 3-0 Europa League win over Dundalk was welcome, but hasn’t eased fears over the team’s form. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, for instance, hasn’t scored in his last five league games. The skipper’s goal troubles have been worry ever since he put pen-to-paper on a lucrative new contract.
Aubameyang’s struggles have coincided with Arsenal’s own goal woes, having drawn a blank across consecutive 1-0 losses to Manchester City and Leicester City. In fact, Alexandre Lacazette is the only player to score more than once this season.
Not helping matters for Arteta is his defensive casualties, with David Luiz now doubtful for the United game. He may join Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari on the sidelines.
But, on the bright side, Willian and Dani Ceballos have returned from injury to bolster the Gunners attack at Old Trafford.
Key Team Stats
- Lost three of their last four league games.
- Lost six of their last nine away league games.
- Failed to score in their last two league games.
