Wigan are looking to use United’s defensive issues against them in the upcoming match.

Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney believes his side can pull off a massive FA Cup upset by beating Manchester United.

United go into the match after a disappointing defeat against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. Having already crashed out of the Carabao Cup, United hope to redeem their campaign by winning the FA Cup. However, according to Wigan’s manager, they should prepare to face a team with a clear plan to win the match.

“We prepare the majority of the season against League One sides, but in any team – whether they are in our division, the Championship or the Premier League – there will be areas defensively you can see you can try to take advantage of,” Maloney told a pre-match press conference.

The manager added: “I have to give my players the belief that we can do it. We have to create a match, which is extremely difficult for Manchester United.”

‘When you play against a team two divisions above, you have to be aware of the talent they have so how we defend will have to be different to how we defend in League One.”

Following their match against Wigan, United will prepare to host Tottenham in their next Premier League game on January 14.
