The Red Devils’ defensive struggles have convinced them to search for a new centre-back.

Manchester United are intensifying their pursuit of AC Milan’s defensive stalwart, Fikayo Tomori, as uncertainties loom over Raphael Varane’s future at the club, valued.

The Red Devils find themselves in a defensive quandary, with injuries sidelining key centre-backs Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

Despite Varane’s recent return to the starting XI against Bayern Munich, speculation suggests a potential January departure, with Bayern Munich and Saudi Arabia emerging as prospective destinations, according to The Guardian. Should Varane exit, United is poised to secure a replacement, with Tomori topping their wish list, as reported by MilanWeb.

Tomori, who is reportedly priced at €40 million (£34m), has been a linchpin in Milan’s defence since his 2021 arrival, amassing over 100 appearances. His recent standout performance in the Champions League against Newcastle, marked by a crucial goal-line interception, has heightened United’s interest.

However, Milan is unlikely to part with the coveted defender mid-season, with a summer move appearing more plausible. The Italian club, focused on defensive reinforcements, have been linked with Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior for a possible January transfer.

Meanwhile, United are open to player departures in the upcoming transfer window, with Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, and Donny van de Beek on the transfer block alongside Varane. Casemiro is reportedly drawing interest from Paris Saint-Germain, while Van de Beek seems poised for a loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt.
