The Red Devils are eager to add a young midfielder to their ranks.
Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Benfica’s Joao Neves.
The Red Devils have struggled for midfield consistency despite the signing of Sofian Amrabat. Erik ten Hag’s side are monitoring several midfielders, but it seems a move for Neves won’t happen this winter.
According to Sky Germany, United are planning to make an offer for the Benfica teenager next summer. So far, Borussia Dortmund are the only other team to have shown interest in signing Neves.
The Portuguese starlet broke into Benfica’s senior squad last winter. Since then, he has established a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders. Playing primarily as a defensive midfielder, Neves has made a total of 11 appearances for the Portuguese giants.
Neves made his Portugal debut when Roberto Martinez’s side crushed Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday. The Portugal manager singled out Neves for praise after the game, saying: “He is a candidate for the European Championship. He is a very mature personality and an infectious player.”
The 19-year-old midfielder was excited to make his debut alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, saying: “We already talked about that. He was playing at Euro 2004 and I wasn’t born yet. Now I’m training with him. It’s a funny thing to tell and a dream.”
