Manchester United reclaimed the sixth spot after an easy home win over the Clarets.
Manchester United defeated Burnley 3-1 in their Premier League game on Thursday. The Red Devils displayed a convincing performance as they ended the year on a positive note.
Ronaldo strikes again!
Man United came into the game hoping to bounce back from their underwhelming 1-1 draw against Newcastle. The Red Devils immediately established their dominance, breaking the deadlock after only eight minutes.
Following a pass from Mason Greenwood, Cristiano Ronaldo prepared the ball to shoot from the edge of the box. However, Scott McTominay took it off him before slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
United continued their attacks and soon doubled their lead through an own goal from Ben Mee. The Clarets’ backline looked completely shattered when the Red Devils decided to push for their goal of the night.
Wayne Hennessey made a fantastic save to stop McTominay from scoring his second goal in the 35th minute. But, the ball came off the post and straight to Ronaldo, who nodded it into the empty net.
The guests’ hopes for a comeback revived soon after Ronaldo’s goal. Aaron Lennon dribbled his way into the United box before firing a low effort past David De Gea.
Burnley pushed for more goals in the second half. However, they remained too cautious of United’s counter-attacks. United also had a few chances to extend their lead but lacked enough composure to score more goals.
Man United leapfrog Tottenham to reclaim the sixth spot on the league table. They will face Wolves in their next game on Monday.
On the other hand, Burnley continue their six-game winless run. Next up for the Clarets is a crucial battle with relegation-candidates Leeds United on Sunday.
