The Red Devils claimed a narrow victory to return to winning ways in the Premier League.
Manchester United defeated Chelsea 2-1 in their Premier League game on Wednesday. A dominating display ensured the Red Devils’ promising victory at Old Trafford.
What happened?
United established their dominance over possession early on, creating a host of goalscoring chances to get the opener. Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for the hosts as they had to wait until the 19th minute to break the deadlock.
Scott McTominay latched onto a poorly-cleared ball inside the box before rifling it past Robert Sanchez with a perfect low shot. United pushed hard to extend their lead as Chelsea struggled to get out of the hosts’ pressure.
However, a moment of individual brilliance by Cole Palmer saw the Blues snatch an equalizer just before the half-time whistle. The former Manchester City star ran across the penalty area before sending an inch-perfect shot into the lower far corner of the net.
Chelsea had a decent start to the second period, but United soon caught up and restored their lead. Following an excellent cross from Alejandro Garnacho, McTominay completed his brace with a header to make it 2-1 for the hosts.
The Red Devils had a few more chances to double their lead in the second half but settled for a narrow victory as they moved to sixth spot on the EPL table.
