Two English giants with contrasting fortunes go head-to-head on Saturday as Tottenham visit the record-breaking Manchester City for arguably their biggest challenge of the season at possibly the worst moment.

A poor run of results has quelled any talk of a title challenge. The visitors have dropped to eighth-place in the Premier League table and 14 points behind their latest opponents and table-toppers City.

That said, Spurs made it back-to-back wins against City last time out in November by winning 2-0 in London and hope to become the first team since Liverpool in 2008/09 to beat both Manchester clubs away from home.

Manchester City Form & Stats

A 3-1 FA Cup win over Swansea City on Wednesday was City’s 15th successive victory in all competitions, a record for an English top-flight club. 35 goals scored and only five goals conceded is a testament to their recent dominance.

Since that 2-0 loss to Tottenham in November, Pep Guardiola’s men haven’t had a single defeat. They’re currently on a 22-match unbeaten (W19 D3), only conceded three goals in their last 14 league games, and could equal a club record of seven home clean sheets in a row on Saturday evening.

It’s also worth noting City have managed 52 corner-kicks in their last five home league games, including 10 or more in their previous three games at the Etihad. Ilkay Gundogan, meanwhile, has been terrific. The midfielder is the Premier League’s highest goalscorer in 2021, with seven goals in only eight outings.

Key Team Stats
  • On an English record 15-match winning run in all competitions.
  • On a 22-match unbeaten run in all competitions (W19 D3).
  • Won 2 of their last 6 league home games against Tottenham (D2 L1).
  • Pep Guardiola has won 11 of his 24 games against Jose Mourinho (D6 L7).
  • Ilkay Gundogan has scored 9 goals in his last 11 league games.

Tottenham Form & Stats

Jose Mourinho is gunning to become the first manager to beat a Guardiola team away from home on three occasions. He previously did so with Real Madrid in 2012 and Manchester United six years later. To pull another triumph off on Saturday, however, he must pull something special out of the bag.

Things have certainly hit a rough patch for the Portuguese coach. From sitting on top of the Premier League in mid-December, Tottenham have slipped down to eighth following a run of only three wins in their last 11 league games (D3 L5). More alarming is how a six-point lead over City turned into a 14-point deficit in less than two months.

Like in their previous fixture in November, Spurs will probably do a Mourinho classic by holding a deep defensive line. They’ll allow City to attack, but will deny them any space to create scoring opportunities. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, therefore, will be key in defensive midfield and potentially susceptible to a booking.

Key Team Stats
  • Lost 4 of their last 5 games in all competitions (W1).
  • Haven’t lost consecutive away league games since October 2019.
  • Aim to become the first Premier League team since Liverpool in 2008/09 to beat both Manchester clubs away.
  • Son Heung-min has scored 6 goals in his last 8 appearances against Manchester City in all competitions.
  • Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has had 4 yellow cards in his last 10 league games, including his last one under referee Paul Tierney.
