A robbery took place at the home of Joao Cancelo, leaving the Portuguese with a bruised eye and a cut.

Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo has revealed a gang of robbers robbed and attacked him at home with his family.

The 27-year-old has posted an image of his facial injuries on Instagram stories, showing a bruised right eye and a cut above his eyebrow, and revealed the thieves tried to harm his family as well.

But while they ran off with jewelry, Cancelo’s family was left unharmed.

In a message, alongside the image Cancelo uploaded on Instagram, he wrote: “Unfortunately, today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family. When you show resistance, this is what happens.

“They managed to take all my jewelry and leave me with my face with this state. I don’t know how there are people [with] such meanness.

“The most [important] thing for me is my family and luckily they are all ok.

“And I, after so many obstacles in my life, this is just one more that I will overcome. Firm and strong, like always.”

Cancelo lost his mother, Filomena, in a car accident when the full-back was just 18. He and his brother, Pedro, were in the car at the time of the accident, but they sustained only minor injuries.

Manchester City and the Premier League have both released a statement that said they were ‘shocked and appalled’ by what had happened.

City have confirmed the police are investigating the incident, while Cancelo is assisting officers with their inquiries. The club made no mention on whether the Portuguese will play in Saturday’s match against Arsenal at the Emirates.
