The Citizens claimed an easy win to snatch their first trophy of the season.
Manchester City defeated Fluminense 4-0 in the Club World Cup final on Friday. A dominant attacking display ensured City’s victory at the King Abdullah Stadium.
What happened?
The Citizens stunned their opponents with an early goal as Julian Alvarez found the back of the net only a minute into the game. A misplaced pass from Marcelo found Kalvin Phillips, who smashed it into the left post, before Alvarez converted the rebound.
The goal encouraged City to push for more goals before the break as they dominated the possession. Only 26 minutes later, the Citizens doubled their lead through Nino’s own goal.
Fluminense found a few chances to get back into the game at the beginning of the second period. But City quickly re-established their dominance over the game as they pushed for more goals.
The Champions League winners finally completed their victory when Phil Foden smashed Alvarez’s low cross into the back of the net to make it 3-0 in the 72nd minute. Fluminense’s defence was already shattered when the Citizens scored their fourth goal of the night through Alvarez ten minutes later. The Argentine international completed his brace with a perfect low shot as City celebrated their first-ever World Cup trophy.
