Liverpool were not able to leapfrog the Citizens when the two sides met on Sunday.

Liverpool and Manchester City drew 2-2 in their Premier League game on Sunday. City hold on to their place on top of the table after a dominant performance at the Etihad Stadium.

Premier League title remains tight!

Man City’s plan to snatch an early opener worked out perfectly when Kevin De Brunye shocked the Reds only five minutes into the game.

However, Liverpool bounced back with an equalizer only seven minutes later, when Diogo Jota found the back of the net. The Citizens continued their attacks after conceding the goal, putting pressure on Liverpool’s backline down both flanks.

Their efforts paid off when Gabriel Jesus restored the hosts’ lead in the 36th minute. Following a perfect cross from Joao Cancelo, the Brazil star sneaked behind Liverpool’s defence. He then put the ball behind Allison Becker by rifling it into the roof of the net.

Despite being ahead, City pushed hard to increase their lead before half-time while Liverpool tried to hurt them with long balls. What happened next proved the hosts had every right to worry about their lead.

Only a minute after the interval, Mohamed Salah’s inch-perfect through ball found Sadio Mane behind City’s backline. The Senegalese star then scored his side’s second equalizer with a precise shot as soon as he received the ball inside the box.

Both sides have several more chances throughout the second period, with City remaining in charge of the possession. However, they settled for a 2-2 stalemate, which keeps the league table exactly as it was before the game.

What’s next for Man City and Liverpool?

The two Premier League giants must now prepare for the second leg of their respective Champions League quarter-final ties on Wednesday.

Man City travels to Spain to face Atletico Madrid while being 1-0 ahead on aggregate. On the other hand, the Reds host Benfica, against whom they won 3-1 in the first leg.
