The former Ajax star has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since joining the club.
Erik ten Hag insists he is writing off Donny van de Beek as a Manchester United flop despite his recent struggles.
The competition for Man Utd’s midfield positions has significantly limited Van de Beek’s playing time.
The Dutchman hoped to improve his situation after Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford in the summer. However, he has barely found chances under the former Ajax boss.
Following Man Utd’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad, reporters asked Ten Hag whether the club might come to the conclusion that signing Van de Beek was a mistake.
“Yes, but that can’t be now,” the Man Utd boss explained. “Because he had quite a good pre-season. He was injured, now he is back, last week he came and I think he played very well, 50 minutes, and I think today was a decent performance.
“I know he can do better because I know (him) very well. But he delivered what I expected in terms of positioning and also pressing, in terms of transition. But I think he can do more and that’s his biggest quality — he can be more of a threat to an opponent’s goal.”
Van de Beek has played only 19 minutes of Premier League football this season. Let’s see if Ten Hag would give him another chance when the Red Devils meet Aston Villa this weekend.
