The England international has been stripped of Man Utd’s captaincy.

Erik ten Hag still considers Harry Maguire an “important” squad member at Manchester United despite his decision to switch captaincy.

Earlier this week, Maguire confirmed he was no longer United’s captain.

Bruno Fernandes has taken over the role ahead of the 2023-24 season, but Ten Hag says that won’t undermine Maguire’s role in the squad.

“We respect Harry,” the manager told Man Utd’s official website.

“Harry’s very important for this squad, for this team. And, you know, in his role as centre-back, we have four centre-backs. I talked about consistency and we know we can’t do it with 11 players and so I’m happy we have four very good centre-backs.

“And we will need them, and he has to fight for his place, as he did last year. He has a high potential so I’m sure he will do it, he will fight for his place and then it’s up to him.”

Having made only 16 appearances for Man Utd last season, Maguire is heavily linked with a move away from the club this summer.

According to BBC, West Ham are Maguire’s main suitors ahead of the next campaign.

The England international’s current deal at Old Trafford runs until 2025. However, after the record-breaking sale of Declan Rice, the Hammers are in a good position to add new players to their squad.
