The Red Devils expect Mount to become a key player in their midfield line next season.

Erik ten Hag has explained Manchester United’s decision to sign Mason Mount.

The Red Devils completed a £60m move to add Mount to their ranks ahead of the next campaign. As a versatile midfielder, the 24-year-old can take up different roles in United’s midfield.

However, Ten Hag is more interested in seeing Mount using both his defensive and attacking traits simultaneously, hinting he would most likely play him in a box-to-box role.

“His vision is to play the offensive [midfield role]. But also he wants to be multi-functional, he wants to be complete,” Ten Hag told United’s official website.

“When you’re playing in midfield, you have to attack, but you also you have to defend.”

Mount made a total of 195 appearances for Chelsea, registering 33 goals and 37 assists. At Stamford Bridge, he mostly played as an attacking midfielder, but under Ten Hag, he could find a more central role in United’s midfield unit.

“I’m sure he will bring dynamism into our game and that was one of our analysis conclusions we made after last season. We need [to be] more dynamic in the midfield department.”

Following their friendly fixture against Leeds United, Ten Hag’s men will continue their pre-season campaign with a game against Lyon next Wednesday.
