The Scottish midfielder has struggled to secure regular playing time in recent months.
Gary Lineker is surprised by Erik ten Hag’s tendency to keep Scott McTominay on the bench at Manchester United.
McTominay has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford lately, playing only seven minutes so far this season. However, his performances for Scotland have remained impressive.
McTominay scored for the Scotts when they defeated Cyprus 3-0 on Friday. The Man Utd star is now the joint top-scorer in the European Championship’s qualifying tournament.
“I notice Scott McTominay playing and getting in the box a lot [when playing for Scotland],” Lineker told The Rest Is Football podcast.
“He scored again in this game, he scored a couple. He’s top scorer in qualifying.
“It’s nuts, yet he’s not really getting a look in at Manchester United. Someone will go for him [in the January transfer window or next summer], surely?”
McTominay came through United’s academy ranks before making his senior debut in 2017. The Scottish midfielder was linked with a move to Bayern Munich after the German giants sold Ryan Gravenberch to Liverpool. However, the deal fell through, and the 26-year-old ended up staying at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag’s side will return to action with a home game against Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.
