The Red Devils captain has struggled for minutes since the arrival of Ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag has insisted Harry Maguire still has an “important role” in his Manchester United plans.

The centre-back suffered an injury while on international duty with England last month. However, he has completed his recovery process at a time when United’s backline needs him the most.

Raphael Varane has suffered an injury that will keep him out until the World Cup next month. Speaking ahead of his side’s Europa League clash against Sheriff Tiraspol, Ten Hag backed Maguire to reclaim his lineup spot.

“Maguire always has an important role,” the Dutchman said.

“He was injured and is happy he is back and now he has to get back into games. It’s always about performance.

Regarding his qualities – no problem. He is great player and has great capabilities to do a job for us.”

Maguire’s poor performances for England have cast doubts on his World Cup chances. But Ten Hag says that won’t affect his squad decision at Man Utd.

“I understand the interest but we especially look at Manchester United. We have to get the right results and performances,” he added.

Following their match against Sheriff, Ten Hag’s men will return to Premier League to face West Ham on Sunday.
