The Red Devils suffered a heavy home defeat upon their return to the Premier League.
Manchester United’s woes continued as they suffered a disheartening 3-1 defeat against Brighton at Old Trafford. The loss marked their third in five Premier League games, and it didn’t go unnoticed, with club legend Peter Schmeichel taking a critical stance, particularly singling out Lisandro Martinez for scrutiny.
Brighton dominated the match, with goals from Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross, and Joao Pedro securing a convincing victory. Man Utd’s only solace came from Hannibal Mejbri’s consolation goal, which failed to alleviate the gloomy atmosphere.
Martinez faced the harshest criticism from Schmeichel, who accused the Argentina international of trying to play the hero.
“It is kind of what happens at Manchester United at the minute, it is very individual,” Schmeichel told Premier League Productions.
“Players, for instance, Martinez here, are trying to be a hero and get in and block. People know this. If we look at him there, he puts himself in a position directly in line of the goalkeeper.
“He should be closing down rather of just stood up trying to block. If you want to block, don’t turn your body, stand tall. Clearly things aren’t right for Manchester United.”
The defeat left Man Utd fans disillusioned, with Erik ten Hag’s decision-making coming under fire. United now faces mounting pressure to regain their form ahead of a Champions League clash against Bayern Munich later this week.
