Manchester United could be on the verge of hijacking Liverpool’s move for the outgoing Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara in light of recent events.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken steps to beat Liverpool to Thiago’s signature. The two have reportedly held talks to discuss a potential deal.

Anfield has long been mooted for Alcantara’s next destination, with the player also favoring a switch to Merseyside.

The 29-year-old has already informed Bayern of his desire to leave. He has refused to commit to fresh terms in the Bundesliga, angling for a move to the Premier League.

But, Thiago’s future could be lying at Old Trafford after all. According to the Norwegian journalist Fredrik A.N. Filtvedt [via Daily Star], Solskjaer and the former Barcelona playmaker have already discussed the prospect of establishing a long-term partnership in Manchester.

The news of Manchester United’s interest in Thiago may catch many by surprise. The Red Devils made Donny van de Beek’s transfer official only yesterday.

They also shelled out £67million to bring in Bruno Fernandes back in January. The arrivals of the two star midfielders have grown competition for places at the Theatre of Dreams.

Solskjaer was all thrilled to announce Van de Beek’s arrival from Ajax on Wednesday.

Yet, United are looking to benefit from Liverpool’s reluctance to meet Bayern’s £27million valuation of Thiago to price Liverpool out of a deal.

The Spaniard’s wage demands could be a sticking point, though. The three-time European champions have allegedly found the midfielder’s salary appetites exaggerated.
