Manchester United have reportedly initiated contacts with Ajax for in-demand midfielder Donny van de Beek, with Barcelona also in the race.

Manchester United hold a long-standing interest in Van de Beek, having explored the possibility of landing the Dutchman amid Paul Pogba’s uncertain future at Old Trafford.

With the French playmaker now poised to stay in Manchester, the Red Devils’ interest somewhat faded.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reignited his interest in the 23-year-old star after being impressed with the midfielder’s output last season.

Van de Beek carried his predatory form from 2018/19 when he helped Ajax win the Eredivisie title and reach the Champions League semi-finals into 2019/20.

Indeed, the highly sought-after youngster netted ten goals and laid on 11 assists to his teammates in 37 appearances in all competitions the last term.

His blistering showings for Ajax have not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona also taking an interest in Ronald Koeman’s compatriot.

Although Van de Beek has his heart set on a move to Camp Nou, he’d like to see how the Lionel Messi saga will play out before making a final decision.

Meanwhile, according to Spanish newspaper Sport, Manchester United have taken steps towards beating the Catalans to the Dutchman’s signature.

Ajax have set a £49million price tag on their prized asset’s head, but Solskjaer remains confident of pulling off the deal.

Despite not lacking numbers in the midfield following the signing of Bruno Fernandes and the resurrection of Nemanja Matic, the Norwegian is still looking to strengthen his squad.

Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira seem highly likely to depart the Theatre of Dreams in the coming weeks.

With the two misfits out of the picture, there’s space for Van de Beek to fill in, and Manchester United are keen on recruiting the former Real Madrid target.
