The Man Utd manager’s handling of one of his players has left Peter Schmeichel puzzled.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has questioned manager Erik ten Hag’s treatment of Scott McTominay.
McTominay, who was on the verge of leaving the club during the summer transfer window, has been relegated to a bit-part role. The midfielder has featured in six of United’s 11 games this season, but only twice as a starter.
Yet, the club’s decision to keep McTominay proved pivotal on Saturday. The Scot showcased his worth with two injury-time goals in the 2-1 comeback win against Brentford. His brace secured a crucial victory and eased the growing pressure on Ten Hag’s shoulders.
“Scott McTominay was up for sale all summer and I don’t understand that,” Schmeichel, said of McTominay on Premier League productions.
“He’s a fantastic player, you need utility players.
“You need players that can play different positions, that can come from the bench and change the course of the game and he’s definitely one of them.”
United will next face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on October 21 in a crucial Premier League encounter.
The Red Devils rank 10th in the standings, with 12 points from eight games. They are five points outside the top four going into the international break.
