Ronaldo returned to the line-up but it didn’t matter as Red Devils went on to suffer a second successive loss on Saturday.

Manchester United can have “no excuses” for their defeat against Aston Villa, says David de Gea.

Manchester United missed the opportunity to move to the summit of the Premier League table after being beaten by Aston Villa 1-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

It looked like the match was heading towards a draw. The scoreboard operators didn’t have any work to do until the 87th minute, but Kourtney Hause headed home seconds later to seal a dramatic late win for the Villa.

The hosts were offered a golden chance to salvage a point in stoppage time when referee Mike Dean awarded them a penalty after goalscorer Hause handled the ball inside the box, but Bruno Fernandes blasted his effort way over as Cristiano Ronaldo stood and watched.

“It’s a very disappointing day for us,” De Gea told the Man United media.

“I think there’s no excuses today. We play at home, with confidence. If we want to win big trophies like the Premier League, [we need to win] these types of games.

“Yeah, I tried to make saves, always help the team. Big saves but at the end we concede from a set-piece and I saw the replay again and probably it’s offside. He was very close to me. Again, that happens.

“I don’t know, it’s a disappointing result and a hard one to take. Now we have to be ready for the next one.”
