The Red Devils must put in a strong display to keep their title hopes alive, having shown a lack of their characteristic tenacity of late.

Manchester United return to action on Tuesday night, playing host to Southampton in the Premier League.

The Red Devils had taken the top position in the Premier League table for the first time in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era but lost their lead after a couple of unfavorable results.

The Saints had also exceeded expectations over the past few months but have experienced a slip in standards lately and have dropped down to 11th in the league standings.

Manchester United vs Southampton Form:

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have managed to pick up just a single point from their last two matches.

They suffered their first defeat to Sheffield United in 48 years last Wednesday and the 2-1 result brought an end to their 13-match unbeaten league run.

United have struggled at home this season, picking up just 14 points from 10 fixtures at Old Trafford. They have also been rather poor defensively, conceding 27 times in 21 games.

They cannot afford to slip up in the upcoming match if they are to remain a legitimate contender for the title.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team head into the game on the back of three successive league defeats. After taking down Liverpool, they have lost out to Leicester City, Arsenal, and Aston Villa.

Southampton, who have suffered just two defeats away from home this season, though, can be expected to pull an upset.

Manchester United vs Southampton Head-to-head:

34 of the 128 meetings between the two sides so far have gone the Red Devils’ way while 34 have been in favor of the Saints.

Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani made sure their side complete a comeback and seal a 3-2 win in the previous meeting in November last year.

Manchester United vs Southampton Team News:

Scott McTominay, who experienced a stomach cramp against Arsenal, is a doubt while Phil Jones continues his prolonged spell on the sidelines. Marcos Rojo, who is expected to return to his native Argentina in the coming days, will also miss the match.

Southampton have a long list of absentees with Kyle Walker-Peters, Nathan Tella, Mohammed Salisu, Michael Obafemi, William Smallbone all out injured. Theo Walcott, Jannik Vestergaard, Oriol Romeu, Ibrahima Diallo could also be unavailable.
