The experienced defender limped off the pitch during France’s friendly match vs Ivory Coast.

France defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 in a friendly game on Friday. Nicolas Pepe put the guests forward in the 19th minute before Olivier Giroud make it 1-1 three minutes later.

A last-minute goal from Aurelien Tchouameni won the game for Les Blues as they celebrated their eighth consecutive victory. France, however, had to deal with Raphael Varane’s absence in the final 30 minutes of the game.

William Saliba replaced the Manchester United star, who appeared to have pain in his foot. In a post-match interview, Deschamps confirmed Varane’s injury.

“He had a little problem with his foot,” the Bleus boss said.

Deschamps did not provide a timeline for Varane’s comeback and whether he could play in France’s next game.

The former Real Madrid defender has struggled with fitness issues since joining the Red Devils last summer. He has featured in only 17 of his side’s 29 league games during the current campaign.

Following their win over Ivory Coast, France will host South Africa on Tuesday. If Varane would not make it into France’s squad, he might miss United’s upcoming league battle against Leicester City.

Varane’s potential absence will be a big blow to United’s dreams of finishing the season among the top four. Victor Lindelof would replace the France international, playing alongside Harry Maguire at the heart of the Red Devils’ backline.
