The Man United boss says Mason Greenwood’s unavailability has impacted Lingard’s transfer.

Greater Manchester Police arrested Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood on Sunday. Following allegations of rape made by his girlfriend on social media, the player is suspended by the club as he undergoes further investigation.

United’s manager Ralf Rangnick reveals Greenwood’s absence has persuaded them to keep Jesse Lingard at the club. West Ham and Newcastle were both keen to sign the forward this January. However, he eventually ended up staying at Old Trafford, where he has struggled for game time under the German boss.

“In a way, yes,” Rangnick responded when asked if Greenwood’s situation had impacted Lingard’s stay (via SportBible).

“But in the end, the board told me, they couldn’t find an agreement with any of those clubs that were interested in him.

“With the window closing on Monday evening, in the afternoon the board informed me they would rather he stay.

“And this was a decision I could fully understand and accept.”

He added: “Jesse asked me and the club if we could give him a couple of days off just to clear up his mind.

“He will be back in the group next Monday, back for training and then be part of the regular squad again.”

United will face Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday. The Red Devils will then return to the Premier League with a match against Burnley four days later.
