Gary Neville admits that Bruno Fernandes looked weary towards the end of last season but is confident that he will return re-energized.

Manchester United went on an impressive 19-match unbeaten streak in 2019/20, a run that ended with a defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals post-lockdown.

Their streak started in January after the acquisition of Bruno Fernandes, which appears to be a coincident but it not really is upon closer inspection.

Fernandes was the most essential ingredient for United in securing Champions League qualification as well as their deep run in the Europa League.

But perhaps what’s more noteworthy of the Portuguese midfielder is how he caused a complete change of environment at Old Trafford by boosting the morale of the players.

The former Sporting Lisbon man, though, suffered a slight dip in form towards the end of last season, probably due to fatigue.

A Manchester United legend has expressed his belief that Fernandes will return fresh after the break and head into the 2020/21 season with renewed energy.

“Bruno Fernandes was shattered by the end of the season. Hopefully, he’s had that rest now and he’s ready to go again,” Gary Neville told Sky Sports.

“His attitude doesn’t tell me, and when you watch him, his performances don’t tell me that there’s going to be a dip because he just looks like he’s got that belief in himself and the courage to take the ball.

“Even if he has a difficult start to the season, he’ll not lose that belief to get on the ball and go and find space, try and play the pass that is difficult and try and play the ball forward.”
