An ex-Arsenal man sees a strengthened Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as genuine title contenders.

Manchester United “should be ready to challenge for the Premier League title this season”, says former Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre.

Man United finished as runners-up in the race for the English top-flight crown last time out, although they finished much behind – 12 points – winners Manchester City.

The Red Devils squad, however, has been reinforced this summer by a big-money and a big-name addition in attack and defense respectively.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men made a powerful statement about their title credentials on the opening day of the new league campaign by smashing rivals Leeds United 5-1.

“Manchester United should be ready to challenge for the Premier League title this season,” Silvestre told MyBettingSites.

“Last season, they finished second so they’ll be eyeing up first place and that’s why they will be aiming to win it this year.

“Signing Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane are two key elements for United to push on, as well as keeping Edinson Cavani for one more season. The team should be ready to push to challenge Manchester City for the title.

“There should be plenty of confidence and self-belief within the players as individuals and as teammates, so I’d expect them to put in a good effort in challenging for the title this year.

“The manager has been around the players for long enough now where he should know how to get the best out of the players.

“Harry Maguire has had plenty of experience of being the captain and is constantly growing as a player and a leader. Scott McTominay is growing as a player and a leader; he’s not shy from taking responsibility in key situations.

“It’s early doors but it’s a great start and hopefully United can keep it going.”
