The Citizens are keen to bolster their backline for the 2023-24 season.
Manchester City are reportedly close to hijacking Brighton’s move for Valentin Barco.
The Seagulls entered negotiations to sign the Boca Juniors star earlier this month. But an offer from Man City has seemingly turned things around in recent days.
According to Ramiro Scandolo, City have made a higher bid compared to that of Brighton. The Reuters journalist claims the negotiations are already “advanced” for the teenage defender.
Barco has established a reputation as one of Argentina’s most promising defenders since joining Boca Juniors in 2021. He has made 17 games across all competitions, including five appearances in Libertadores.
A report from Daily Mail claims Barco has a £8m release clause. City are reportedly open to paying the clause, hoping to edge out Brighton in the transfer race.
City are expected to invest more in Argentine talents after the successful signing of Julian Alvarez. Following his move to Etihad last summer, the World Cup winner has made 50 appearances for the Citizens despite fierce competition in their attacking line.
Things are not particularly easier in defence, even if Joao Cancelo leaves City this summer. Sergio Gomez will fight for a lineup spot while both Nathan Ake and Rico Lewis are able to cover for the Portugal international’s absence.
