Manchester City have announced that Ilkay Gundogan has tested positive for coronavirus, ruling him out of their Premier League opener against Wolves.

Gundogan has become the third player in the Manchester City camp to test positive for COVID-19 after Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte.

The German midfielder’s prognosis leaves Pep Guardiola with a selection dilemma ahead of the club’s opening game of their 2020/21 Premier League campaign away to Wolves on Monday night.

As per the health protocols in the event of a positive case, Gundogan must begin a 10-day quarantine to contain any risk of spreading the illness.

“Manchester City can confirm that Ilkay Gundogan has tested positive for Covid-19,” read a statement on the club’s website.

“Ilkay is now observing a 10-day period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine. Everyone at the club wishes Ilkay a speedy recovery.”

Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva, and Aymeric Laporte, who has returned to training, are unavailable for the clash at Molineux.

Guardiola’s side will become the last team to launch their 2020/21 campaign once the first whistle blows in Molineux, having been granted extra rest because of their exploits in the Champions League last month.

A victory tonight will see them become the first Premier League team to win 10 consecutive season openers.
