The Portuguese superstar was on Man City’s radar before joining United.

Manchester City have reportedly denied Cristiano Ronaldo’s claims that he was “close” to joining them last year.

In August 2021, reports about Ronaldo’s possible move to Juventus emerged in English and Italian outlets.

Having left Juventus after three seasons, Ronaldo was keen to come back to the Premier League. But at the dying stages of the transfer market, Manchester United stepped in to return their club legend.

In a controversial TalkTV interview, Ronaldo claimed he came “close” to joining Man City. But a new report suggests the Premier League champions think otherwise.

According to ESPN, Man City are denying Ronaldo’s narrative. Sources inside the club insist Pep Guardiola’s side only had a “mild” interest in signing the Portugal international.

Back then, Man City were actively monitoring the market for a new striker.

Following Sergio Aguero’s departure, the Citizens failed to find a replacement and played without a conventional number nine for most of the season. Ronaldo, on the other hand, became United’s top scorer despite the Red Devils’ struggle for form.

The situation has changed dramatically since the start of the current campaign. Erling Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm at Man City, while Ronaldo’s relationship with United has gone from bad to broken under Erik ten Hag.
