Pep Guardiola has offered a fitness update on Jeremy Doku ahead of Manchester City’s clash against Aston Villa.

Doku played a fantastic first half in City’s 3-3 draw with Tottenham on Sunday. However, he had to be substituted soon after the break due to an apparent injury.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Guardiola said on the winger: “We have training this afternoon. I will talk with the doctors and see after.”

The nature of Doku’s injury is unclear, but he remains a doubt for the match against Villa. Guardiola is expected to take extra safety measures regarding his players’ workload as they hope to avoid dropping more points during the festive period.

Doku has established himself as a starter in Guardiola’s lineup in recent weeks after a string of brilliant displays in the Premier League. The 21-year-old is competing with Jack Grealish on the left-hand side of City’s attacking line. However, Guardiola won’t be able to use Grealish against Villa as the England international is suspended.

Following their match against Villa on Wednesday, City will take on Luton Town four days later. The Citizens will then travel to Belgrade to meet Red Star in their final group-stage match of the Champions League campaign next week.
