The Spanish defender missed City’s entire pre-season due to a knee injury.

Aymeric Laporte will not play for Manchester City during August, according to Pep Guardiola.

The Man City defender made an early return from his knee injury at the final stages of the last season. He then went on to have a knee surgery that kept him out of action during City’s pre-season campaign.

Guardiola is confident about Laporte’s recovery process but admits he will miss the first month of the new season.

“Laporte is injured,” Guardiola told a news conference. “He had knee surgery after last season, played the last two or three games with an important injury and made an incredible effort.

“He had surgery, so far is doing really well but you have to be careful with a knee. I think through August he will be out, September I think maybe he will start to be with us.”

Guardiola used Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias at the heart of City’s backline for their final pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich. John Stones is another defensive option for Guardiola ahead of City’s Community Shield clash against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Citizens have also shown interest in Brighton’s Marc Cucurella, but Guardiola was hesitant to comment about the player.

“He is a Brighton player, I cannot say anything else,” Guardiola added.

Asked about adding a new left-back to City’s squad, he responded: “If it is possible yes if not we stay with what we have.

“We have enough players who can play there. I never complain about the squad I have.”
