The Man City defender joined the Bavarians on a loan deal in January.

Pep Guardiola has insisted Manchester City have “always appreciated” having Joao Cancelo in their squad.

A reported dispute between Guardiola and Cancelo convinced the defender to continue the rest of the season elsewhere. Bayern Munich stepped in at the perfect time, signing the Portugal international on a six-month loan deal.

The German giants have a €70m option to buy Cancelo in the summer. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the club are yet to make a final decision on the 28-year-old’s future.

The Sky Sports journalist claims Bayern are not planning to activate the option but could enter negotiations with City over a lower fee.

“Cancelo has always been so appreciated here,” Guardiola said on Saturday.

“We can’t forget what he did here. He has been, and maybe will be, but has been such an important player for us.”

Cancelo only played for ten minutes when Bayern lost 3-0 against City in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday. However, Tuchel started him ahead of Alphonso Davies in his side’s Bundesliga clash against Hoffenheim four days later.

The Portuguese defender will face his former side at Allianz Arena in the UCL clash’s second leg next Wednesday. Let’s see if he and Leroy Sane can help Bayern mount an unlikely comeback against their former club.
