Portuguese international Jose Fonte is fully convinced Manchester City are getting a proper player with skill and mentality in Ruben Dias.
Jose Fonte has backed Ruben Dias to come good and impress in the Premier League for Manchester City.
City have reached an agreement to sign the 23-year-old for an initial £62 million from Benfica. The Portuguese club announced details of the deal on Sunday night.
Nicolas Otamendi will head to Estadio da Luz as part of the deal, which is expected to be finalized before the summer transfer window closes on October 5.
The arrival of Dias couldn’t have come at a better time for City. The Citizens suffered their first loss of the season in a 5-2 humbling at the hands of Leicester City.
City has struggled with defensive flaws of late and their latest defeat once again brought all of their issues to light.
Once the deal is completed, it has been suggested that Dias will partner one of Aymeric Laporte/ Nathan Ake in the heart of the City defence.
Lille star Fonte, who is teammates with Dias at international level, is confident the ex-Benfica star will do well in new surroundings at the Etihad.
Fonte told talkSPORT: “Dias is one of my favourite young centre-backs. He’s only 23, but he shows great maturity.”
“He has a great work ethic. He wants to learn, he wants to improve. He observes the great defenders, he’s interested in knowing the game.”
“So, for me, it’s a great acquisition for Manchester City. They’re getting a top, top player, who wants to get better and better and that’s very important.”
“He’s humble. He’s very, very skillful with the ball at his feet. He has a good pass between the lines. He reads the game well, he attacks the ball well in the air. He’s strong in the duels.”
“They’re getting a very good player in Dias. I have no doubt he’s ready; he’s been playing at the highest level for the last two, three years.”
“He starts every game for the national team, as well. He has a young body, but an older mind.”
“So I think he’s ready. He’s going to be excited to show what he’s capable of. If Manchester City needs him right now, they can use him.”
Guardiola has so far refused to make a comment on Dias until he is officially announced as a Manchester City player.
