First-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Gabriel Jesus meant that the two teams walked away from the Etihad with a point apiece.
Manchester City hosted Liverpool on Sunday night in probably the biggest Premier League fixture of the season so far and it was a game of two halves – the first nail-biting and the second rather bland.
It was the away side who drew first blood. Sadio Mane was tripped by Kyle Walker as he paced inside the box and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. It was Mane’s partner in crime who got on the scoresheet as Mohamed Salah curled the ball into the bottom-left corner.
City were obviously annoyed after finding themselves behind what probably contributed to their agony the most was not getting a foul on Raheem Sterling at the other end just before the goal.
The home side, however, did not have to wait too long for a response. Into the 30th minute, Kevin De Bruyne sprayed the ball to Gabriel Jesus who elegantly poked it home for the equalizer.
De Bruyne earned his side a golden opportunity to take the lead before half-time. His cross hit Joe Gomez’s arm and, after a lengthy VAR review, a penalty was awarded. But the Belgian playmaker could make no use of it as he dragged the ball wide, despite sending Alisson the wrong way.
The second-half was rather uneventful. Both the teams had a few chances but neither made it count as the match ended 1-1.
