‘Majestic’ Guardiola desperate for the title, says Richards

Richards admires the ‘majestic’ football Guardiola has brought to Manchester City and expects he’ll be desperate to reclaim the league title.

Pep Guardiola enjoyed a stunning first three seasons at Manchester City, winning back-to-back Premier League titles among other honors. The club even won a domestic treble in 2018/19 under him.

The 2019/20 campaign, however, proved to be a different challenge altogether. City were no longer the dominant force, with Liverpool dethroning them as Premier League champions by a whopping 18-point margin.

And while the Citizens claimed another Carabao Cup triumph, it was a very underwhelming campaign. Especially in light of their FA Cup semi-final and Champions League quarter-final exits.

Guardiola could only watch on as an uncharacteristic City struggled to consistently perform to their high standards.

There were even calls from the club’s own supporters to dismiss Pep following the club’s shambolic Champions League defeat at the hands of Lyon last month.

But Micah Richards remains a firm admirer of Guardiola’s and is convinced the Catalan coach will get the squad back in shape for the upcoming campaign.

“City’s football under him has been majestic and it’s puzzling how a squad packed full of world-class stars lost nine league games and ended up 18 points behind Liverpool,” the ex-City defender told the Daily Mail.

“Guardiola will be desperate to wrestle the title back. The title race will be tighter this season.”

City will begin their 2020/21 Premier League campaign away to Wolves on September 21.
