Danny Murphy believes Harry Maguire has improved Manchester United defensively. However, he is not yet close to Van Dijk’s level.
Danny Murphy has jumped in defence of Harry Maguire who is facing much criticism at the moment.
The England international has been subject of much scrutiny since he signed for the Red Devils last summer. His £80m price tag hasn’t helped him either.
For someone who holds the world’s most expensive defender tag, many believe Maguire is yet to deliver the promise on his signing.
The latest bashing from fans comes in the aftermath of United’s Europa League loss to Sevilla. The 27-year-old looked to be the culprit as Sevilla grabbed their equalizing goal. He was in no man’s land as he completetly lost his man in the box.
United fans have now questioned whether Maguire was worth the huge amount forked out on him. But Danny Murphy has jumped in defence on the defender saying the criticism is quite harsh.
He adds that the United man will never bring as much value as Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk in defence.
“Man United have got to be better defensively, that’s been proven this season” the former Liverpool midfielder told talkSPORT.
“With Harry Maguire, people just compared the price tag with Van Dijk, and that’s’ not right.”
“You can’t compare Maguire to Van Dijk. Van Dijk is a better player is every aspect. He’s never going to be Van Dijk.”
“He’s never going to be that quick, he’s never going to be as good a passer, he’s not going to be Van Dijk.”
“But what he has done is he’s made United better and he’s going to get better.”
“So cut him a bit of slack.”
Maguire was an ever-present figure for United in the just concluded Premier League season. He played all available minutes of their 38 games.
The jury is now out on the Red Devils’ captain to prove why he is worth the humongous fee paid to Leicester City last summer.
