Lyon’s Maxwel Cornet was happy to play his part as his side sent Manchester City packing out of the Champions League.

It was more delight for Maxwel Cornet as he got on the score-sheet against Manchester City once more.

When Lyon secured a 1-0 victory against Manchester City in 2018, it was the Ivorian that got the only goal of the game.

Cornet seems to love scoring against Manchester City and continued that streak yet again on Saturday.

The 23-year-old opened the scoring for Lyon before a brace from Dembele in the second half compounded City’s woes.

In fact, the goal by Cornet was his fourth against Manchester City in the Champions League. Only Lionel Messi has equal or more goals than the Lyon star against City in the competition.

Speaking after the game, the forward was happy to be a thorn in Pep Guardiola’s path once again.

“These are exceptional matches to play in, they don’t come along everyday, I have succeeded once more against Man City.” Cornet told RMC-Sport.

“We have to underline the work of the team. I am delighted.”

“We are lucky to play against the best players in the world. We are not here by accident, we have worked very hard, we have never given up.”

Many tagged Lyon as underdogs in the buildup to the game and Cornet says his side took no offence in that.

“That is part of football, the most important thing is to rout the doubters, that is what I have done, I have always given my all for the shirt.”

“I do not know if we were underestimated, we do our work in complete humility. We work each day. We have to continue like this.”

Up next for Lyon is an humongous clash against Bayern in the semis, Cornet believes once again that his side can stage yet another upset.

“We know the attacking power of this team, we saw it again vs Barça.”

“It will be a difficult match that we will have to play with desire, there is no reason why we shouldn’t succeed.”
