In an interview with Marca, Luis Figo made a wild admission about Lionel Messi’s future at FC Barcelona and what he might do.
Luis Figo knows a thing or two about not wanting to remain at FC Barcelona. We often forget but he is widely considered as the Catalan club’s biggest traitor for going directly to Real Madrid. During that late ‘90s era, the Portuguese winger was arguably the most talented player Barcelona had after Ronaldo Nazario left the club to play at Inter Milan.
Figo proved several times he was a happy man at the club as he won several trophies with them. However, the 2000 elections at Real Madrid gave him a unique opportunity. He decided to become Florentino Perez’s promise while thinking he didn’t have a chance to win the position. But Luis had no idea he was selling his soul to the devil.
There’s a good chance he decided to make this move because the Barcelona board wasn’t treating him as he wanted. In his view, he deserved to win all the titles he could and Real Madrid was the ideal place for him to do that. His wishes came true a year later after winning the Ballon d’Or and subsequently the UEFA Champions League.
Figo’s honest truth about Messi’s situation in Barcelona.
With all this in mind, it’s only natural that Figo can offer his honest opinion about Lionel Messi’s current situation at FC Barcelona. He thinks that Leo simply doesn’t want to continue at the club and he doesn’t blame the Argentine. In reality, nobody should blame Messi for anything after all he gave to the Catalan club.
Figo said the following on Marca: “I watched the thing with Messi and his attempt to leave Barcelona this summer like all football fans: expectantly and surprised.
“He’ll have his motives and reasons for making that decision. I don’t know what happened beforehand. Every club wants to have a player like Messi, but then it depends on factors like the current financial situation at the club, the money he’ll cost the club in wages, the will of the player…
“But generally, in life, if you don’t want to be somewhere, in the end there’s nothing that can change your mind.”
