Luis Enrique refused to blame Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea for Spain’s shock defeat to Ukraine on Tuesday evening.

David de Gea came under scrutiny once again after his error cost Spain a defeat to Ukraine in their Nations League game on Tuesday night.

The 29-year-old has regularly come under fire with Manchester United following a string of errors that date back 18 months.

De Gea was once again criticized after he was supposedly in a wrong position as Viktor Tsygankov slotted home in the 76th minute for Ukraine.

Rather than putting any blame on the goalkeeper, Spain boss Luis Enrique decided to defend the Man United man.

“You can always do more, but blaming De Gea is already a bad habit.” Enrique said as quoted by Football365.

“If David is blamed for a game like this, switch it off and we’ll leave.”

Enrique added: “If you attack in a continuous way, you know there are transitions. If a team defends and keeps it at 0-0, they grow, and in one action they’ve caught us. We have to congratulate them.”

“Nothing happens because in one or two games you don’t score goals. We created chances to kill them off. It was a game clearly under our control, with opponents closing the passes and the passing lines.”

The error would not do well for De Gea who faces a battle with Kepa Arrizabalaga to be Spain’s no 1. At club level, the return of Dean Henderson further means the 29-year-old has no room for more error at all.
