Dejan Lovren admits to deliberately elbowing Sergio Ramos as vengeance for an incident in the 2018 Champions League final.
It was quite an eventful night when Real Madrid went against Liverpool at NSC Olimpiyskiy in Kyiv, Ukraine in the final of the 2018 Champions League.
But the night was a disaster for Liverpool for multiple reasons. Firstly, they ended up losing 3-1. Secondly, which also probably largely contributed to their loss, Mohamed Salah was forced off the field within 30 minutes of the match due to injury.
Salah was hauled to to the ground by Sergio Ramos and sustained a serious injury in his shoulder in the process.
It was an uphill battle for Liverpool after that which they failed to win, as goals from Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale saw Los Blancos pick up their 13th European crown.
Dejan Lovren came face to face with his teammates’ troublemaker later that year in a UEFA Nation’s League encounter between Croatia and Spain. And the Croatian defender decided to take the matter into his own hands as he threw an elbow on Ramos.
“Luka Modric tried to reduce the tension between me and Ramos, and we were facing Spain together with the Croatian national team, and I deliberately hit him with my elbows and told him that we have drawn now,” Lovren told Egyptian TV channel Sada El Balad.
“I do not want to make a big story, but I think that what Ramos did was intentional to injure my friend. So, it was time to pay for what he has done.
“We were playing much better than Real Madrid before Salah was injured in the Champions League final. His exit was a big blow for us, after his exit, they began to dominate the match.”
