Lokomotiv Moscow boss Markus Gisdol has resigned from his position following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Gisdol joined the club on October 10, just five months prior, but decided to step down from his post with immediate effect.

The German coach released an official statement, saying: “I cannot pursue my calling in a country whose leader is responsible for a war of aggression in the middle of Europe.

“That is not in line with my values, which is why I have resigned from my position as coach of Lokomotiv Moscow with immediate effect.

“I can’t stand on the training ground in Moscow, train the players, demand professionalism and a few kilometers away orders are given that bring great suffering to an entire people.”

However, according to an official statement by the club, Gisdol was sacked from his post, and Marvin Compper will lead the team for their upcoming games.

“Markus Gisdol was dismissed from the post of head coach of Lokomotiv,” read a statement on Lokomotiv Moscow’s website.

“Marvin Compper has been named acting head coach. He will prepare the team for the upcoming matches in the Russian Cup, as well as in the Russian Premier League.”

The news comes just a day after all Russian teams were kicked out of UEFA and FIFA competitions for the foreseeable future.

The Russian Premier League continues to operate despite the war, while the Ukrainian Premier League was suspended last week.
