A summer signing hit the ground running at Liverpool but fitness issues have been a stumbling block for him as of late, and so they remain.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Thiago Alcantara will remain unavailable for selection for the crunch Premier League clash against Manchester City on the weekend.

The Spain international is set to miss his sixth successive game due to a knock he picked up following Richarlison’s tackle in the Merseyside derby.

“It’s an injury but doesn’t need surgery, all these kind of things but still takes time,” Klopp told of his €22 million summer signing’s condition during Friday’s pre-match press conference.

“The challenge that day was a harsh one and directly against the leg, so still adapting but improving. It will not be too long anymore but for this game, I don’t think he will be in.”

Only 135 minutes across two appearances have been played by the former Bayern Munich man, with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis also keeping him away for action earlier in the campaign.

Thiago has missed all of Liverpool’s Champions League group stage matches while also playing no part in the Sheffield United and West Ham Premier League games.

With Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho also missing, Liverpool may have to tread lightly against Man City.
