Former Liverpool star Glen Johnson has urged the club to sort out the contract situation of Georginio Wijnaldum as soon as possible.

Liverpool should be looking to offer ‘fantastic’ player Georginio Wijnaldum a new contract, according to ex-red Glen Johnson.

The Dutchman is set to become a free agent next summer after four successful years at Anfield.

Wijnaldum was linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer, with former Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman reportedly keen to bring him to Spain.

In the end Koeman failed to prise him away from Liverpool, yet Barca will be able to begin negotiating a free move for him in just under two months’ time.

Wijnaldum appears no closer to penning a contract extension on Merseyside. That means he could be free to negotiate a free transfer for next summer at the turn of the year.

However, Johnson believes Jurgen Klopp should be doing everything in his power to keep the player at Liverpool, branding him a “fantastic footballer”.

“I think they need to keep him,” the ex-Liverpool man said as quoted by Daily Star.

“I think he’s a fantastic footballer, he’s one of those all-round midfielders, great on the ball, not an out-and-out goalscorer, and not an out-and-out defender, so he’s one of those utility men in midfield who can play in any one of the three positions.

“And I think he’s a fantastic squad player and obviously, the experience he’s gained in the last few years is hard to replace.”

Over recent months, Wijnaldum has continued to remain coy on his future and refused to give nothing away.
