Former Arsenal player Perry Gloves has warned Liverpool against the signing of Arsenal outcast Shkodran Mustafi.
Ex-Gunner Perry Groves has warned Liverpool against the signing of Shkodran Mustafi.
The German defender has emerged as a surprise candidate for the Reds as they seek an emergency center-back option before the January transfer window shuts on Monday.
Van Dijk and Joe Gomez have already suffered long-term injuries and further injuries to Fabinho and Joel Matip have left the reigning champions short in defense.
The likes of West Ham’s Issa Diop, New York Red Bulls’ Aaron Long, and Preston’s Ben Davies are among those linked. Elsewhere, Mustafi is also being considered by the Reds.
The German defender has only six months left on his contract and the Gunners could be willing to let him leave. However, question marks remain over the defender’s quality.
The center-back has made a number of high-profile mistakes during his time at the Emirates. He has fallen down the pecking order and has only featured just three times in the Premier League this season.
Ex-Gunner Groves weighs in on the matter and insists Mustafi would be a bad alternative for Liverpool.
“I wouldn’t be taking Mustafi, because I’ve seen him play for Arsenal!” Groves told talkSPORT.
“He’s always got a mistake in him. He loses concentration.”
“Even in the ginger brotherhood, I can’t back him!”
“If you’re bringing someone in, they’ve got to be as good or better than what you’ve got – and I don’t think Mustafi is.”
