Liverpool star eyeing Cameroon return ahead of AFCON

Joel Matip might reconsider his retirement from international football after the recent Cameroon FA presidency election.

During an election on Sunday, the members of the Cameroon FA elected Samuel Eto’o as the organization’s new president.

During his campaign, Eto’o explained his plans to retain the services of a few retired stars. Ahead of this January’s Africa Cup of Nations, this could result in a huge squad boost for the Lions.

According to African Insider, Joel Matipis considering a return to the Cameroon national team. The election of Eto’o has reportedly turned the heads of several dual nationals and retired players.

Having made his national team debut in 2010, Matip has not played for Cameroon since 2015. The Liverpool defender has made 24 appearances for the Lions, including three World Cup matches in 2010 and 2014.

Unlike Cameroon, Matip’s potential return to the Cameroon national team will be a huge blow for Liverpool. The Reds will most likely see Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Naby Keita leave for the AFCON in January.

Matip has enjoyed great form this season. The 30-year-old’s partnership alongside Virgil Van Dijk has provided the Reds with great defensive stability recently. In case of Matip’s return to the national team, Liverpool might abandon their plans to sell Nat Phillips.

Cameroon will play against Burkina Faso in their opening game of the tournament on January 9. The Lions will then meet Ethiopia and Cape Verde in their next group stage games.
