According to a report, Liverpool are ready to take a major decision on one of their talismanic figures in Virgil Van Dijk.

Liverpool are reportedly ready to initiate talks with Virgil van Dijk over a new five-year contract in January.

The talismanic centre-back, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against Everton, currently has a deal that expires in 2023.

However, Jurgen Klopp wants to protect the 29-year-old’s long-term future at the club and also show him support in a tough period for him at the moment.

Van Dijk is well respected at the club and the Reds are happy to offer a proposal to the player’s representatives in January, according to CBS Sports.

The report adds that the Dutchman himself is keen to stay on Merseyside, after seeing his stock rise since his arrival for £75m from Southampton in January 2018.

Since then, Van Dijk has progressed into one of the most reliable and impressive center-backs in world football. The Dutchman was also a key part of Klopp’s team which won the 2018-19 Champions League and the 2019-20 Premier League.

However, the Reds will have to target success without their big man in defence this season. Jordan Pickford’s challenge early in the Merseyside unfortunately led to a serious ACL injury.

He is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing a successful injury on his right knee.
